About The Collection

The most important collection of Cubist Sculpture
from the Vkhutemas period ever assembled

The collection comprises 101 sculptural works in diverse materials though the majority are of red or white terracotta.

The group has been assembled over 10 years. All of the works are from one private European collection, assembled during the 1980's. From the original single owner it passed to a dealer who sold many of the works through public auction and private sales. The sculptures here have been purchased from the same dealer directly as well as galleries and auction houses. The largest part of the collection is represented here.

During the Stalin reign vast numbers of artistic works that were considered subversive art were either, shipped to museum cellars to rot, lost, or destroyed. During the 1980s many of these works were rediscovered and sold to museums and private collectors in Europe.

A significant amount of technical research has been carried out on a selection of pieces, methods used include: Ramen spectrometry, X-ray photography, X-ray fluorescence and PCA analysis.
